On December 12th, during the 3GPP TSG-RAN #106 meeting in Madrid, a groundbreaking 6G RAN-level Study Item was approved, co-signed by 56 companies. This initiative represents a significant milestone in the evolution of 6G standards, aiming to interact with ITU to define 6G technical performance requirements. The study will explore deployment scenarios, performance requirements, and potential directions for next-generation radio access technologies.
Led by global industry leaders, this effort highlights a unified commitment to creating an interoperable and sustainable 6G standard. With a focus on immersive performance, integrated capabilities, seamless terrestrial and non-terrestrial coverage, and green, low-carbon solutions, 6G promises to revolutionize connectivity while advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Key contributors emphasize the transformative potential of 6G to drive innovation through AI convergence, ubiquitous intelligence, and sustainable networks. This study lays the foundation for a collaborative global 6G ecosystem that addresses common challenges and creates unprecedented opportunities for the digital future.
