What is Voice over 5G or Voice over NR?

5G voice is the regular mobile phone call service that service providers offers on 5G smartphones. From service provider’s point of view, there are a lot of mobile network evolution aspects to consider behind the scene, to secure a high-quality mobile voice service everywhere. To enable service provider voice calls on 5G smartphones and other 5G devices, the network infrastructure used for 4G voice (VoLTE) today will also be used to enable 5G voice calls but IMS platform will have to be enhanced.

What are the major differences between VoLTE and Vo5G?

In 5G, the default voice codec in 5G smartphones enables “HD voice+”, using the 3GPP standardized Enhanced Voice Services (EVS). EVS can already be used in 4G networks, but is not mandatory. It provides a greater voice quality experience than what narrowband voice and HD voice provides today in 2G to 4G networks. It also provides better sharing of music within a voice call, for example music announcements when queuing at the help desk, or if you share music from a concert you are attending.

What is the Voice over 5G NR (VoNR or Vo5G) infrastructure?

Voice over NR is voice over IP incorporating the IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) infrastructure previously introduced in LTE. Its advantage comes in the ability to have in place a management and orchestration system that guarantees QoS for each application from an end-to-end perspective, as opposed to VoIP provided via traffic-channel-only approach. The purpose of IMS is the establishment, control, and maintenance of a packet data unit (PDU) session, including all relevant data bearers with corresponding QoS flow for best end-user quality experience.

What is the Enhanced Voice Service (EVS) speech codec?

Following the trend of high-quality audio transfer, 3GPP developed the enhanced voice services (EVS) speech codec that is now mandatory with 5G voice. The EVS continues the tradition of link-adaptive multi-rate speech codecs (AMR). Leveraging the demand of enhanced audio quality and allowing the transfer of audio signals beyond speech such as music, the EVS uses the higher data rates offered by 5GS for the transfer of enhanced encoded audio signals.

How is the Enhanced Voice Service (EVS) speech codec implemented?

EVS increases the audio bandwidth and covers the audible frequency range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, corresponding to the typical range of the human ear. To convert the analog audio signal into a digital signal, the EVS applies known methods like amplitude quantization and discrete sampling. As an enhancement, compared to older generation speech codecs, the EVS provides a finer quantization level and a higher sample rate. One important aspect of the EVS is its interoperability codec mode that would allow to adjust the EVS speech codec also to legacy voice codec rates, enabling a smooth introduction of VoNR.
