What is 5G NSA?

According to 3GPP TS 21.915 “Non-Stand Alone” (NSA) architecture allows 5G Radio Access Network (AN) and its New Radio (NR) interface to be used in conjunction with the existing LTE and EPC infrastructure Core Network (respectively 4G Radio and 4G Core), thus making the NR technology available without network replacement. Following the 3GPP standards this is a configuration where only the 4G services are supported, but enjoying the capacities offered by the 5G New Radio (lower latency, etc). The NSA is also known as “E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC)” or “5G Architecture Option 3/3X”.

Why MIB and SIBs are important in 5G?

5G Master Information Block (MIB) includes system information transmitted on BCH transport channel and BCCH logical channel. The IE (Information Element) SystemInformationBlock contains RRC (radio resource configuration) information which is common for all UEs. It is transmitted on DL_SCH transport channel and PDSCH physical channel

How is UE connected in 5G NSA?

In NSA mode, connection to both LTE cell and 5G cell are mandatory. In this Non-standalone mode, LTE is used for control (C-Plane) functions e.g. call origination, call termination, location registration etc where as 5G NR will focus on U-Plane alone
