The 3GPP RAN#113 Plenary meeting in Madrid did not endorse a 5G-dependent 6G deployment architecture. The industry continues to treat standalone 6G, MRSS and 6G–6G aggregation as the principal migration foundation.
Option 1 remains relevant for the specific case of a 6G FR1 master carrier aggregating an existing 5G FR2 secondary carrier, while Option 2 would introduce a more conventional 5G-anchored NSA-style transition. The simplified Option 3 remains subject to SA2 feasibility analysis and a final decision by TSG SA.
The next decisive milestone is 3GPP RAN#114 Plenary meeting in Boston, December 2026, particularly regarding the approval or not for an additional migration option and the inclusion of split-bearer support.”
